Gus - The Notweiler @ WCRR

Gus Passed away on June 20th. Far too soon. He leaves a hole in our hearts

Yes we have a lab. No he is not a Rottweiler. But Gus is an amazing old boy. This poor man is 12 yrs old and found himself in the shelter. That is no place for a boy of this age. It is no secret that I have a love of old dogs. Big black old dogs. Big black old dogs almost never get adopted. So we asked if he could come and be part of West Coast Rottweiler Rescue. Don’t ask me why I do this. I don’t know. I only know that I am thrilled to have Gus in our home. He is the perfect guest (almost) and the little diva dog adores him now.
We would release Gus to a permanent foster home. But he has special needs and they would have to be met. Gus is very overweight and he needs lots of gentle exercise. Stuff like swimming or short walks will work with him. But be aware that Gus is agile enough to make it up on the couch for a cuddle and if he sees something he likes he does pull on the leash. There is nothing much more that he loves than to lay his sweet blocky head on your lap and gaze into your eyes. Gus also has some arthritis and needs a home with few or no stairs. And he wants someone who is home during the day to spend time with him. He has not been tested with cats but we found he doesn’t really like the neighborhood cat and will chase if given a chance.
We are looking for Gus’s angel. Someone that will take him into their home, give him a good diet and exercise, love and respect. In return Gus will make you laugh with his grunting, cuddle quietly by your side and look lovingly at you when you talk to him. West Coast Rottweiler Rescue will pay for Gus’s medical needs.

Title: What we have learned about Gus

We have learned that he is the sweetest old boy ever. What a wonderful house guest he is. That’s what I love about seniors they don’t want much other than to be around you on a soft bed or couch. And Gus certainly loves his couch time. We rarely see him on the couch but he has left a ton of hair there for us to clean
Cleaning Gus up has been a work in progress. He doesn’t like to stand long enough for us to really get him brushed out so it has taken awhile. Plus it’s not an activity he enjoys. And he has shown his displeasure but grabbing the brush out of my hand and tossing it away. After a week of trying to cajole him into allowing me to brush him, I simply took him outside on leash and made him put up with it. Today it is warm enough for him to have a bath. We will hook up the outside hose thru the kitchen window so he can have warm water, but we are going to insist we get this done. LOL
Gus is a follower. Not that he follows behind you but rather he takes his direction from the evil little diva dog. The first couple of days Gus was satisfied to use the very small back yard as his bathroom, but now under the instruction of Ms. Sashka (I am the queen of the world) he has decided that we must go across the street to do our business. I’m sure that it is just a ploy to make me carry filled poop bags around.
He also picked up another rather nasty habit from Sashka and that one we have stopped in its tracks. Gus thought he should follow suit when Sash would charge and bark at dogs on the street. He is big boy and it comes across as very scary to the neighbors so we have made him stop doing that. He actually is fine with other dogs but would need to be introduced properly without his side kick present.
All in all we love having the old boy here. Gus lets us know what he wants in no uncertain terms. If he wants some attention he simply lays his head on your lap and looks lovingly into your eyes. If he is hungry, he goes from the kitchen to you and back to the kitchen. And if he needs to go for a walk (cause we won’t use the backyard anymore) he makes the funniest grunting noise. Gus is an amazing guest and would fit into any quiet home easily.

Title: Gus Makes Us Laugh
He makes me laugh alot. He would like to roll on his back like a regular dog but doesn't seem to be able to make it that far. And while he tries he grunts and groans and make the funniest sounds. We are getting his weight down slowly but surely. Hopefully one day he will make it.
We are changing Gus's med's After a visit to our vet we confirmed that Gus has arthirtis in one front leg and well as both back knees. I think with the change in meds and again, the weight loss it won't be long before he is going to be able to act as frisky as he feels.
The old boy does not like cats at all. Nope, not at all. I don't know that he would hurt a cat, but he certainly tries to put the run on the neighbourhood cats. And while he is ok with submissive calm dogs, he will not back down from a pushy dog.
All Gus wants is a warm place to lie, good food and someone to show him the love he deserves.
